Introduction
Built for Devs operates a developer evaluation platform that helps software companies understand how developers experience their products, documentation, and APIs. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect information when companies use our platform and when developers interact with products that have our tracking script installed.
We are the data processor in most situations described here. The companies ("Customers") that install our tracking script on their products are the data controllers—they determine why data is collected and are responsible for disclosing its collection to their users.
Please read this policy in full. If you have questions, contact us at hello@builtfor.dev.
What We Collect
We collect data in two distinct contexts: data generated by developers using our Customers' products (collected on behalf of Customers), and data about the companies and developers who have accounts on our platform.
Data collected on behalf of Customers (tracking script)
When a company installs our JavaScript tracking script on their product, documentation, or developer portal, the script records how developers move through that product. Specifically, we collect:
- Session identifiers—a pseudonymous token that links events in a single session. This is not tied to a name or email address unless the Customer explicitly passes one to us.
- Timestamps—when each event occurs, used to measure how long it takes developers to reach milestones (our core product metric).
- Journey events—discrete milestones defined by the Customer, such as "viewed the quickstart guide", "installed the SDK", or "made the first API call". We do not record keystrokes, form values, or free-text inputs.
- IP addresses—used for rate limiting inbound requests. IP addresses are not persisted to our database and are discarded after the request is processed.
We do not collect names, email addresses, or any other personally identifiable information from the tracking script unless a Customer explicitly passes that data to us and has obtained appropriate consent to do so.
Data collected from platform users (companies and developers)
When companies register for and use our platform, we collect:
- Company name, website, and business contact email
- Billing information (processed by Stripe—we do not store raw payment card data)
- Platform activity such as evaluation purchases, dashboard usage, and settings changes
When developers register to participate in paid evaluation sessions, we collect:
- GitHub profile information (username, avatar, and public profile data) via OAuth
- Email address, for communication about evaluations and payouts
- PayPal account details, solely to process payout payments
- Evaluation session recordings and associated transcripts generated during a session
How We Use It
We use the information we collect strictly to operate and improve the platform:
- Tracking data is used to compute Time to Value (TTV) metrics and generate developer experience reports for Customers. This is the core purpose of our platform.
- Evaluation recordings and transcripts are analyzed by automated AI systems to produce structured findings reports. These reports are delivered to the Customer who purchased the evaluation session.
- Company account data is used to manage subscriptions, process payments, send transactional emails, and provide customer support.
- Developer account data is used to manage evaluation assignments, communicate about sessions, and process payouts.
- Aggregate, anonymized data may be used to improve our platform, train internal models, and publish industry benchmarks. Aggregate data cannot be linked back to any individual or company.
We do not use any data for advertising. We do not build behavioral profiles of individual developers for sale or transfer to third parties.
Data Sharing
We do not sell data. We share data only in the following circumstances:
With Customers
TTV metrics, journey event data, and evaluation findings reports are shared with the Customer whose product generated that data. Customers receive aggregate and session-level analytics but do not receive raw IP addresses or any data that was not generated within their own product's tracking scope.
With service providers
We use a limited number of sub-processors to operate the platform:
- Stripe—payment processing for company subscriptions and evaluation purchases
- PayPal—payout processing for developers
- Google (Gemini)—AI transcription and video analysis of evaluation recordings
- Anthropic (Claude)—AI quality review and report generation
- Resend—transactional email delivery
- Cloudflare (R2)—object storage for evaluation recordings and uploads
Each sub-processor is bound by data processing agreements and may only use the data to provide their services to us.
Legal requirements
We may disclose data if required by law, court order, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Built for Devs, its Customers, or the public.
Data Retention
We retain data only for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes described in this policy:
- Tracking data (session identifiers, timestamps, journey events) is retained for the duration of the Customer's active subscription, plus 90 days after termination to allow for final reporting and data export.
- Evaluation recordings are retained for 12 months after the session is completed, then permanently deleted. Customers may request earlier deletion.
- Evaluation findings reports are retained as long as the Customer account is active.
- Developer account data is retained for 7 years after the last payout to comply with financial record-keeping requirements, then deleted.
- Company account data is retained for 7 years after account closure to comply with financial and tax obligations.
All data is stored on infrastructure located in the United States.
Your Rights
Depending on where you are located, you may have rights regarding your personal data. These may include the right to access, correct, or delete data we hold about you, the right to object to or restrict certain processing, and the right to data portability.
If you are a developer who used a product with our tracking script
You are a data subject whose data was collected on behalf of a Customer (the company whose product you were using). You may contact us directly at hello@builtfor.dev to request deletion of data associated with your session. Because the data is pseudonymous by default, you will need to provide the session identifier or sufficient context to identify your records.
If you are a developer with a platform account
You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your account data at any time by contacting hello@builtfor.dev. Deletion requests will be processed within 30 days, subject to any legal retention obligations noted above.
If you are a company Customer
You may manage your data through the platform dashboard or by contacting us. As the data controller for tracking data collected through your installed script, you are responsible for honouring the data rights of your own users and for disclosing our tracking script in your privacy policy.
We will not discriminate against anyone who exercises their data rights. To make any request, contact us at hello@builtfor.dev.
Contact
If you have questions about this policy, want to exercise your data rights, or have a concern about how we handle data, please contact us:
Built for Devs—Privacy
We aim to respond to all privacy requests within 5 business days. For deletion requests, we will confirm receipt within 5 business days and complete the deletion within 30 days, or notify you if a legal hold prevents deletion.
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the effective date at the top of this page and, for material changes, notify active Customers via email.
