Developer Agreement
Effective date: March 2026
Overview
Built for Devs connects software companies with independent developers to conduct structured product evaluations. As a developer, you evaluate developer tools, APIs, and documentation honestly and in good faith—and you get paid for it.
This agreement sets out the terms under which you participate in evaluations. By connecting your GitHub account and accepting an evaluation invite, you agree to be bound by these terms.
Read this agreement carefully before your first session. The requirements here are not suggestions—they are the standard every evaluation is held to.
Eligibility
To participate as a developer on Built for Devs, you must:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Have an active GitHub account in good standing
- Have a PayPal account capable of receiving payments in your country
- Be a practicing software developer with relevant experience to evaluate the products you are assigned
- Not have any conflict of interest with the company whose product you are evaluating (see Conflicts of Interest)
Built for Devs reserves the right to decline or remove any developer from the platform at its discretion.
Session Requirements
Each evaluation session must meet the following requirements to be eligible for payment:
Duration
Sessions must be between 30 and 45 minutes of genuine, active evaluation. Sessions that end before 30 minutes or consist of idle time will not be approved. You should complete the full evaluation task as described in the invite.
Recording
You must record your screen for the full duration of the session. No camera is required. The recording must be clear and capture your actual interaction with the product—not a staged re-enactment.
Genuine evaluation
You must evaluate the product as you would if you were genuinely considering using it. Do not attempt to game the product, fabricate problems, or produce a falsely positive or negative review. Honest, accurate observations are what make your evaluation valuable.
Think-Aloud Requirement
This requirement is non-negotiable.
Sessions that do not include continuous think-aloud narration will be rejected, regardless of how good the evaluation otherwise appears.
Throughout your entire session, you must narrate your experience out loud. This means saying what you are doing, what you are thinking, what you expect to happen, and how you feel when something works or does not work.
Examples of what narration looks like in practice:
- "I'm going to look for the quickstart guide first, because I don't know where to start."
- "This error message isn't clear to me—I don't know what file it's referring to."
- "Okay, that worked. I'm surprised it was that simple."
- "I'm spending a lot of time scrolling through the docs trying to find the authentication section."
Silence for extended periods will cause your session to be flagged for review. Keep talking. Even if nothing is going wrong, describe what you are reading and what you are about to try next.
Compensation
$129
flat per approved evaluation, paid via PayPal
Payment is issued within 7 days of your evaluation being approved by our review team. Approval typically happens within a few business days of submission.
Payment is made in USD via PayPal Payouts. You are responsible for any fees charged by PayPal to receive the payment, and for reporting and paying any taxes due on your earnings in your jurisdiction.
Evaluations that are rejected do not receive payment. There is no partial payment for incomplete or low-quality sessions.
Rejection & Disqualification
Rejection
Built for Devs reviews every submitted evaluation before approving payment. An evaluation may be rejected if it fails to meet the session requirements described in this agreement—including insufficient duration, lack of think-aloud narration, staged or dishonest behavior, or recording quality issues that make the session unusable.
If your evaluation is rejected, we will notify you with a reason.
Disqualification
A single rejection due to a quality issue—not a technical failure—results in automatic disqualification from future evaluations. This is a strict standard, and it exists to protect the quality of the platform for everyone involved.
If you believe your rejection was in error, you may appeal by contacting us at hello@builtfor.dev. Appeals are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. The outcome of an appeal is final.
Anonymity & Privacy
No camera is required during your session. You do not need to appear on video.
You are completely anonymous to the companies whose products you evaluate. No identifying information—including your GitHub username, full name, or contact details—is shared with them. Companies receive only the findings report derived from your session.
Your screen recording is shared with the company as part of the findings report. Be aware that anything visible on your screen during the session—including browser history, open files, or notifications—may be seen by the company. Take reasonable steps to protect your own privacy before beginning a session.
Built for Devs uses your data in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
Conflicts of Interest
You must not evaluate a company's product if any of the following are true:
- You have been employed by or contracted for that company in the past 12 months
- You have a significant financial interest in that company (e.g., equity, vested options)
- You have a close personal relationship with someone at the company that would materially influence your evaluation
When you receive an evaluation invite, you are attesting that no conflict of interest exists. If you discover a conflict after accepting an invite, notify us immediately at hello@builtfor.dev so we can assign a different developer.
Completing an evaluation while knowingly having a conflict of interest may result in permanent disqualification and forfeiture of payment.
Conduct Standards
Your conduct during evaluations reflects on the platform and on developers as a whole. We expect every developer to:
- Approach each product with genuine curiosity and good faith
- Provide honest observations—neither inflating problems to appear thorough nor minimizing them to appear favorable
- Complete sessions within the agreed time window after accepting an invite
- Not share confidential product information encountered during a session with third parties
- Not use access to a company's product for any purpose beyond the evaluation itself
Any attempt to manipulate, fabricate, or misrepresent an evaluation will result in permanent disqualification and may be reported to relevant parties.
Termination
You may remove your account at any time by contacting us. Removing your account does not affect payment for evaluations already approved.
Built for Devs may terminate your access to the platform at any time for violations of this agreement, fraudulent behavior, or conduct that is harmful to the platform, companies, or other developers. In cases of serious misconduct, termination may be immediate and without prior notice.
